Most A/C problems start at installation. A unit that is too large short-cycles and leaves your home feeling clammy. A unit that is too small runs all day and never quite catches up on the hottest week of the year. Getting the size right requires a real load calculation, not a rule of thumb off square footage.
Biermann starts every A/C install with a Manual J load review: your home’s square footage, insulation, window area, ceiling height, and the local Western Mass climate. Then we recommend equipment that is actually sized for your house, explain the efficiency options that make sense for your budget, and walk you through available Mass Save rebates before you decide.
Air conditioning installation and replacement is a growth department here. It runs out of the same West Springfield shop that has handled Western Mass plumbing and heating since 1983, with the same licensed crew and the same 1-year labor warranty on every new install.
Every Install
Central air, ductless mini-splits, heat pumps, and light commercial. We install all four, and we will tell you which one makes sense for your home or property.
For homes with existing ductwork, a central split system is usually the most cost-effective path to whole-house cooling. We replace aging central A/C systems and install new ones on homes that have never had central air. The install includes the outdoor condenser, the indoor air handler (or coil over an existing furnace), refrigerant line sets, and electrical hookup to your panel.
We assess your existing ducts as part of every central air quote. If the ducts are in good shape and correctly sized, we leave them alone. If they need sealing or modification, we coordinate that work before equipment goes in. Ductwork is outsourced to our trusted sheetmetal partners; we manage the coordination so you deal with one team from start to finish.
Mini-splits are the answer for older Western Mass homes built without central air, for finished basements that bake in July, for attic conversions that the central system cannot reach, and for additions that fall outside the existing duct runs. One outdoor unit connects to one or more indoor heads via small refrigerant lines, with no ductwork required.
Modern cold-climate mini-splits run efficiently down into single-digit temperatures, which means the same system gives you A/C in summer and supplemental heat in shoulder seasons. Multi-zone systems let you run two, three, or four indoor heads from a single outdoor unit. We run refrigerant lines cleanly through finished spaces and match the indoor head placement to how you actually use each room.
A heat pump is an air conditioner that also heats: it moves heat rather than generating it, which makes it significantly more efficient than a gas furnace or electric resistance heat over a full season. Cold-climate models rated for Western Massachusetts winters maintain efficiency well below freezing and are often paired with a gas backup for the coldest nights.
High-efficiency heat pumps in the 18 to 22 SEER2 range qualify for Mass Save rebates and the federal 25C tax credit. For homeowners looking to reduce heating costs, replace an aging A/C-and-furnace combo, or move toward all-electric heating, a heat pump replacement is often the right long-term investment. We run the numbers with you before you decide.
Homeowners come first in our A/C department, but we also handle light commercial installs: apartment buildings, condo associations, small offices, medical and dental suites, and municipal buildings across Western Massachusetts, plus Enfield and Suffield, Connecticut. Split system replacements across a multi-tenant building, new installs for a tenant fit-out, capital upgrades on aging equipment.
Our team works cleanly in occupied spaces and coordinates schedules around your tenants or patients. For ground-up commercial construction, we provide design-assist and equipment selection, then manage the full install including sheetmetal coordination. Ductwork and sheetmetal fabrication is outsourced to vetted specialty partners, and we manage that relationship so you have one point of contact.
Massachusetts homeowners have access to meaningful rebates on qualifying high-efficiency A/C equipment through Mass Save, the energy efficiency program funded by Eversource, National Grid, and other utilities. Rebate amounts change each year, but qualifying central A/C systems and heat pumps can return several hundred to over a thousand dollars back to the homeowner after installation.
The federal 25C Residential Clean Energy Credit covers a percentage of qualifying heat pump costs on top of state-level incentives. For homeowners replacing an older, inefficient system, stacking Mass Save rebates with the federal credit can meaningfully offset the upfront cost of moving to a higher-efficiency unit.
We help you identify what you qualify for before you decide on equipment, so you can factor the real net cost into your comparison. This is part of our free consultation, not an add-on. Call us or fill out the form below.

Keeping your home or property running safely is our core business. We build long-term relationships, not one-off transactions.
Two trades, one dedicated crew. From an emergency call at your house to a ground-up commercial build, you never juggle multiple contractors.
Four decades of working in active homes, apartment complexes, dental offices, and banks. Clean worksites, low noise, and respect for your space.
Prevailing wage, certified payrolls, public bidding, and strict documentation. Most small shops won't touch public projects. We welcome them.
Free consultation, proper load review, clean install, 1-year labor warranty. Same process for a single-family home or a 24-unit apartment building.
Tell us about your home: square footage, existing ductwork or lack of it, which rooms run hot, and your budget. We run a Manual J load calculation and explain which system types fit your house. Free consultation, no pressure. Formal written estimates with full load review and equipment selection are $65.
We recommend two or three equipment options at different efficiency levels, show you the Mass Save rebate and federal tax credit for each, and let you decide which payback timeline fits your situation. No pushy upsells. No mystery markups on equipment you did not ask for.
Our licensed crew installs, pressurizes, and commissions your system. We test every zone, confirm airflow to every room, and walk you through the controls before we leave. Every new A/C install comes with a 1-year labor warranty. We can also set you up on a seasonal maintenance plan to keep the system performing for years.
Central air conditioning works through your existing ductwork and conditions the whole house from one outdoor unit and one air handler. It is the right call when your home already has ducts in decent shape and you want whole-house cooling from a single system. A ductless mini-split skips the ducts entirely, running refrigerant lines directly from an outdoor unit to one or more indoor heads mounted on the wall or ceiling. Mini-splits are ideal for older homes without ductwork, for additions, converted attics, finished basements, or any room that runs hot. They also give you room-by-room temperature control, which central air cannot. We install both, and we will tell you honestly which one fits your house.
A central A/C replacement in Western Massachusetts typically runs between $4,000 and $9,000 installed, depending on the size of your home, the efficiency rating (SEER2) of the equipment, whether any ductwork needs attention, and the complexity of the installation. Ductless mini-splits for a single zone generally run $3,000 to $6,000 installed; multi-zone systems cost more depending on the number of indoor heads. We offer a free consultation to talk through your options and budget before any formal written estimate ($65 fee).
SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2) measures how efficiently an air conditioner cools your home over a full season. A higher SEER2 means lower electricity bills. Federal minimums in our region are 14.3 SEER2 for split systems. High-efficiency equipment runs 18 SEER2 and above. The payback period on a higher-efficiency unit depends on how much you run your A/C, your local electric rates, and available rebates. Mass Save rebates through your utility can offset a meaningful portion of the cost of high-efficiency equipment. We walk through this math with every homeowner before you commit to a unit.
Not always, but it depends. Ducts that are undersized, leaking, disconnected, or in poor condition can undercut the performance of even a brand-new high-efficiency system. Before we install, we assess the existing ductwork. If the ducts are in good shape and sized correctly, we leave them alone. If they need sealing, insulation, or modification, we coordinate that work with our duct partners before the equipment goes in. For homes without any ductwork, a ductless mini-split is usually the cleaner and more cost-effective path.
Sizing is based on a Manual J load calculation, not a rule of thumb off the square footage. A load calculation accounts for your home’s square footage, ceiling height, insulation levels, window area and orientation, local climate data, and internal heat sources. An undersized unit runs constantly and never quite cools the house on the hottest days. An oversized unit short-cycles, which wastes energy, wears out the compressor faster, and leaves your home feeling humid. We run a proper load review before recommending any equipment.
A straight replacement of an existing central air system, where the ductwork is already in place and in good condition, typically takes one day. New installs that require refrigerant line runs, electrical panel work, or ductwork modifications may run two to three days. Ductless mini-split installs for a single zone are usually a full day; multi-zone systems can take two days. We confirm the schedule before we start and do not leave the job half-done overnight.
Yes, several. Mass Save, the energy efficiency program funded by Massachusetts utilities (Eversource, National Grid, and others), offers rebates on qualifying high-efficiency cooling equipment including central A/C and heat pumps. Rebate amounts change each year but can reach several hundred dollars on a qualifying split system and up to $1,500 or more on cold-climate heat pumps. The federal Residential Clean Energy Credit (25C) also covers a percentage of qualifying heat pump costs. We help you identify what you qualify for before the install so you can factor the rebates into your decision.
